What to Pack for a Hospital Stay

Whether for a planned procedure or an acute need, an extended hospital visit can feel stressful for many patients. Preparing ahead of time by packing the right items in your bag can help you feel more at ease and ensure your hospital visit goes smoothly. By having everything you need — from essential documents to items that make you feel at home — you’re better able to focus on your care and recovery without added worry.

At East Adams Rural Healthcare, we understand. We’ve been helping our patients feel as comfortable as possible during their visits to our hospital for more than 70 years. Below is our helpful guide about what to bring when you are headed to the hospital overnight, several days, or longer.

Start With the Essentials

Before considering the personal items that will make your stay more comfortable, begin with the required essentials. These include your identification, important medical information, and documents that help ensure a seamless hospital experience.

Valid Photo ID and Insurance Card

Make sure you bring a valid form of identification and your health insurance card. These documents are necessary for hospital admission and billing. It is also wise to double-check that your information is up to date before you arrive.

Recent Medical History and Test Results

If you have had any recent lab work or imaging studies, bring copies or ask your healthcare provider to forward them to the hospital. These documents can help your doctors make more informed decisions about your care because they have a complete picture of your health.

List of Allergies or Sensitivities

Always carry a list of allergies or sensitivities to medications, foods, or other substances. This helps medical staff avoid potential risks and keeps you safe during your stay.

A List of Current Medications

Bring a written or digital list of the medications you must take, including dosages and the times you take them. This is crucial information that the hospital staff will need, as it helps ensure they are aware of your treatment plan and prevents potential interactions with medications administered during your stay.

Personal Comfort Items

Next, you can focus on how to plan for comfort. Hospitals do their best to create a welcoming environment, but bringing some familiar items from home can make a big difference in how comfortable and relaxed you feel. Here are some ideas for what to pack for your hospital stay to help you feel at home.

Clothing

Although hospitals will provide gowns, bringing comfortable clothing may help you feel more at ease. You could consider packing:

  • Loose-fitting pajamas or a nightgown
  • A cozy robe and slippers with non-slip soles
  • A few pairs of comfortable socks
  • An outfit to wear when you return home, especially if you need something soft and easy to wear following a procedure

Toiletries

While hospitals usually offer basic toiletries, you may prefer using your own. Here’s a list of personal care items to consider bringing:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Lip balm and hand lotion (hospital air can be dry)
  • Face wash, shampoo/conditioner, and deodorant

It can be nice to have these familiar items, especially for longer stays.

Passing the Time

Depending on the reason for your hospital stay, there might be periods of downtime. When you know what to pack for your hospital stay, having things to keep you occupied can reduce boredom and help keep you motivated.

Bringing something from home to help you relax and keep your mind engaged can make your stay more enjoyable. Consider packing:

  • A good book, magazine, or e-reader
  • Your phone, tablet, or laptop (don’t forget your chargers!)
  • Headphones to listen to music or podcasts without disturbing others
  • A favorite blanket or pillow for added comfort

What to Pack for a Hospital Stay: Other Items

Everyone is different and has different needs and preferences. Here are a few additional items that are popular for extended hospital visits:

  • Snacks. Hospitals provide meals, but having your favorite snacks handy, especially if you have dietary preferences, can be a nice touch. Just be sure to remain within the confines of your dietary restrictions.
  • Notebook and pen. Keep a journal of your experience, jot down any questions for your doctor, or keep track of the health information you receive during your stay.
  • Extra bag. It helps to have a small extra bag for any items you may collect during your stay, such as prescriptions, aftercare instructions, or additional toiletries.

This proactive planning allows you to focus on what is most important — your health and recovery. If you are unsure what else to bring, contact the hospital for more specific recommendations based on your needs.
